Convert an image between JPG, PNG and WEBP

Pick a format and drop the file. The conversion happens on a canvas in this tab, so nothing is uploaded.

What conversion actually changes

A format is a way of storing pixels, not a property of the image itself. Converting re-encodes those pixels in a different scheme, and each scheme makes a different trade.

JPG throws away fine detail in a way the eye is bad at noticing, which is why it makes photographs small. It has no transparency and no sharp edges — text and line art go fuzzy.

PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparency, at the cost of size. A photograph saved as PNG is often five times larger than the same image as JPG, with no visible benefit.

WEBP does both: lossy for photos, lossless for graphics, with transparency in either mode. Every current browser supports it, but some older software (and a few upload portals) still does not.

Questions

Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?

Yes, once. JPG is lossy, so the first save is the only free one. Keep the PNG if you might need to edit again.

What happens to transparency?

JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas become white. If you need the transparency, stay in PNG or WEBP.

Is WEBP safe to send to people?

For browsers, yes. For email attachments and office documents, JPG or PNG is safer — some older software cannot open WEBP.

Can I convert HEIC?

Only in Safari. Chrome and Firefox cannot decode HEIC, so an HEIC file will show an error. Export it as JPG from the Photos app first.
